Rob Muriel started his legal career as a law clerk in the Appellate Court of Illinois, before joining two large Chicago law firms. His core practice is commercial litigation and insurance coverage. Following his appointment as Director of the Illinois Depart of Insurance, he provides insurance regulatory advice in Illinois and nationally.
Mr. Muriel is an accomplished commercial and insurance coverage litigator. In 2019, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker asked Mr. Muriel to leave private practice to serve as Director for the Illinois Department of Insurance. After his confirmation by the Illinois Senate, he became a recognized figure on the national insurance regulatory scene. He held various leadership roles at the National Association of Insurance Commissioners, including serving as Chair of the Accelerated Underwriting in Life Insurance Working Group, Treasurer of the Insurance Compact, and Co-Chair of one of the workstreams on the Executive Special Committee on Race & Insurance. His practice includes insurance regulatory, compliance and governmental matters.
Mr. Muriel is also an accomplished commercial and insurance coverage litigator representing policyholders, corporations and institutions in trials, appeals and arbitrations in state and federal courts. His core practice included insurance coverage and bad faith claims, commercial litigation, financial fraud claims, legal malpractice cases and consumer class action cases. In addition to running his own law practice for over ten years, Rob clerked for the Honorable Allen Hartman in the Appellate Court of Illinois and worked at two large Chicago law firms (Hinshaw & Culbertson and Nixon Peabody (formerly Ungaretti & Harris).
In 2015, Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner appointed Mr. Muriel to the Illinois Racing Board, which regulates horse racing, where he served for four years. He is on the board of directors of United Policyholders, a California-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to be a trustworthy and useful information resource and a respected voice for consumers of all types of insurance in all 50 states.
Mr. Muriel was also formerly President of the Hispanic Lawyers Association of Illinois and President of the Alumni Board of Governors for Loyola University Chicago School of Law. He has served on numerous civic boards, including serving on the Board of Directors for the North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic, AIDS Legal Council of Chicago, Almost Home Kids, and the Executive Committee for the Alliance of Bar Associations for Judicial Screening. Rob was recognized by Chicago Lawyer Magazine as “40 Lawyers Under 40 to Watch” in 2000. In his spare time, Rob is a Chicago sports enthusiast, has coached youth sports in his community, and served as an adjunct professor at Loyola University Chicago School of Law.
Mr. Muriel is a graduate of Loyola University Chicago School of Law where he was an Editor on the Law Journal. He earned his bachelor’s degrees in accountancy and finance from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana. He also passed the C.P.A. exam and worked at Arthur Andersen & Co. before law school.
